Utility-Scale Solutions: Managing Complexity, Taking Responsibility

Utility-scale projects come with a unique set of challenges. They require not only the selection of suitable components but, above all, the secure implementation of regulatory requirements for grid connection. Topics such as feed-in management, cybersecurity and the integration of battery storage systems have become key success factors in project realization today. In addition, we offer dedicated BESS and battery standalone solutions tailored specifically for the utility segment.

Over the past years, meteocontrol has gained extensive experience in this field − with combined solutions involving the blue’Log XC for reliable feed-in management, the SCADA Center for local plant control, and the VCOM Cloud, which unites monitoring and asset management on a single platform. Together, these technologies have helped connect several gigawatts of projects to the grid worldwide.

Every Large-Scale Project Is Unique

While smaller systems often follow standardized procedures, utility-scale projects differ widely in their framework conditions. Grid codes vary from country to country, site conditions are diverse, and investors bring their own expectations.

The key lies in a flexible approach − whether through automated feed-in management, manual intervention on site, or hybrid control concepts. The Utility Solutions division combines these competencies within meteocontrol, transferring experience from previous projects directly into new ones.

A Coordinator Between Technology and Market

The new department is led by Kevin Savage, a long-standing member of meteocontrol who has managed numerous international large-scale projects. His focus: defining technical requirements that comply with regulations while remaining economically viable.

“Our goal is to set up projects that are both technically sound and financially sustainable. That requires experience, clear processes, and the willingness to adapt,” says Savage.

A Structure That Sends a Strong Signal

By establishing Utility Solutions, meteocontrol is sending a clear message: large-scale projects are a discipline of their own − and they require a dedicated structure. The team supports projects from the initial concept through engineering and commissioning to grid-connection verification. Continuous knowledge exchange within the team ensures that lessons learned from completed projects flow directly into new ones.

This approach strengthens three key dimensions:

  • Reliability – regulatory confidence and proven experience in working with grid operators.
  • Speed – fast response times during critical project phases.
  • Transparency – end-to-end monitoring and a solid data foundation for informed decisions.

Together with the project management team, meteocontrol has already brought several gigawatts of utility-scale projects successfully online.

The Future Belongs to Utility-Scale

The number of large-scale projects will increase significantly in the coming years. Power Purchase Agreements, declining generation costs, and the global expansion of renewable energy are driving demand. At the same time, requirements for grid stability, data security, and system integration are becoming more demanding.

The gigawatts of installed capacity achieved so far show what is possible − yet each new project presents its own challenges. Utility Solutions is meteocontrol’s answer to this reality: a team that takes ownership, applies experience, and delivers flexible, practical solutions.

Because utility-scale is not simply a larger version of smaller projects − it is a discipline of its own.
And that is exactly where meteocontrol’s strength lies.
