The market for hybrid energy systems is expanding rapidly. Energy generation, storage, and consumption technologies are being combined into a single system managed by a central control component.

For scenarios which combine renewable energy production systems and battery storage, this central component is a Hybrid Energy Management System (HEMS), which orchestrates the complex flow of energy within the system.

The HEMS solution from meteocontrol is intended for systems composed of PV and battery storage that are connected to a single grid connection point. The “HEMS license blue’Log^® XC”, is a software extension that enables your blue'Log^® XC to optimize your energy generation and consumption based on your needs and local grid connection requirements.

PV self-consumption

The hybrid system is controlled such that all available solar power is used for selfconsumption. Excess solar power is used to charge the battery system, and excess solar power is only fed into the grid when the battery is fully charged.

When solar energy generation falls below a predefined threshold at the grid connection point, the battery system begins to discharge the stored energy.

Zero feed-in

Just as in PV self-consumption, all available solar power is used for self-consumption. When more solar power is produced than can be consumed locally, as much energy as possible is stored in the battery system.

When the battery system is fully charged, the excess solar power is curtailed so that no power is fed into the grid. As soon as solar generation can no longer cover local consumption, the battery system begins to discharge.

Band shaving (e.g. peak shaving)

The hybrid system operates within a predefined band at the grid connection point. When not enough PV power is available and the lower threshold of the band is reached, the battery starts discharging to avoid expensive peak loads.

If the upper threshold is reached, the battery starts charging. If the battery is already fully charged, the PV system is curtailed so as not to exceed the band.

Setpoint control

HEMS can receive and implement external active power setpoints from grid operators to maintain grid stability. If a grid operator sends a curtailment command, the excess PV power is not simply “wasted”; instead, it is stored in the battery for future use. The setpoint commands can be received via digital inputs, or analog inputs, or Modbus.

Energy trading

Energy traders can remotely control the hybrid energy system via a dedicated interface. In this way, the hybrid system can also participate in intra-day and day-ahead auctions.

Reactive power control

In addition to managing active power, HEMS can also contribute to voltage stability by supplying reactive power at the grid connection point. Reactive power can be controlled by methods including Q(V), Q control, power factor control, and others. You decide whether the reactive power demand is primarily met by the PV system or the battery.

Which Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are already compatible with the HEMS?

Already now, a wide range of BESS is compatible with the HEMS. Please refer to our compatibility list for our blue'Log XC. If you are missing a compatibility, please contact our sales team. Our development team is always working to ensure that the list is constantly expanded.

How can an existing blue'Log XC be extended to a HEMS?

HEMS is a license extension for the blue'Log XC. It can therefore be retrofitted to an already installed blue'Log XC via a software update.

Can HEMS be integrated into existing PV systems or battery storage systems?

Yes. Since HEMS is a license extension for our blue'Log XC, it can be conveniently integrated into an existing PV system or battery storage system.

What are the advantages of a hybrid energy management system compared to a conventional PV system or a stand-alone battery system?

Through HEMS, energy generation, storage and consumption technologies can be combined into a single system and managed by a central control component. At the same time, HEMS optimizes energy generation and consumption based on your needs and local grid connection conditions. You avoid higher electricity costs or get maximum self-generated energy from your PV system. Apart from this, HEMS can also be used for battery-only storage systems.

How does HEMS handle excess energy production from the PV system, and can it feed it into the grid?

This depends on the configuration of the HEMS. Excess PV energy can be fed into the grid or supplied to the battery. A regulation of the PV system is also possible.

Can HEMS be used to control reactive power as well as active power?

Yes. All functions for reactive power control, which are already implemented in blue'Log XC, can also be used with HEMS without restrictions. Thus, the reactive power can be provided grid-compliant at the grid connection point.
