Al Asilah Desalination Company

In recent years, meteocontrol has been able to win an increasing number of new customers in Arab countries and support interesting projects with customized solutions. In the region, special challenges often arise due to the exposed location and the hot climate.

One example of a special project is the PV plant for Al Asilah Desalination Company in Oman, which was built in the South Sharqiyah region near the small town of Al Ashkharah. The 5-acre desalination plant is used to produce much-needed drinking water from the abundant seawater. The electricity for this complex process is generated regeneratively by solar energy, which accounts for 20% of the electricity demand.

The project is expected to revitalize the entire region and provide drinking water to about 200,000 people. The plant is located about 400 meters from the coast on the east coast of Oman and was built 6-9 meters above sea level. While we often associate the area with a fairytale image and the magic of 1001 Nights, the extreme climate and lack of water pose major supply problems for the people. The new plant is expected to produce 80,000 cubic meters of drinking water per day. With a capacity of 2.6 MWp, the PV system of our local partner, Bahwan Engineering Company, ensures the energy supply.

With zero-feed-in control, VCOM Cloud and monitoring by meteocontrol, the complex plant is powered by renewable energy. Al Asilah has been operational since mid-2021 and will make an important contribution to Oman's supply and growth in the coming years. We look forward to working with our local partners on more new projects in the future and developing specific solutions even for complicated plants.
